Helical Staircase Stoke Newington

John Horton: Design, Manufacture, Installation

This elegant helical staircase was commissioned to provide access to the mezzanine of a contemporary warehouse flat in Stoke Newington.
The staircase’s main feature is its central sweeping column. The columns simple sculptural form belies the complexity of its construction, as it is in fact a  fabricated section, which has been constructed from individually cut and formed pieces of sheet metal, which have been seamlessly welded to form the final simple looking helical shape.
The oak treads and their supporting steel structure are cantilevered, to also support the minimal seamless stainless steel handrail.
In keeping with the flats contemporary style the mezzanine landing is fitted with a floating glass balustrade, with a UV bonded glass shelf.
